Lithium battery bipolar electrode energy density can reach 500wh/L
Publish:Sino Energy Corporation    Time:2017-05-10
In order to increase the battery size, increase electric vehicle mileage, Fraunhof ceramic technology and systems (IKTS) in Dresden and its partners will use the fuel cell bipolar principle used in lithium batteries.
In the current battery, the shell and the contact structure occupy more than 50% of the volume, which means that the battery can not be packed. At the same time, the connection between small batteries will increase resistance.
Bipolar mode is not to connect the battery unit side by side, but a large area of the battery stack together, directly installed in the vehicle chassis. It is said that the bipolar battery in the EMBATT project eliminates the shell and the contact structure, through the direct connection of the battery unit, the current flows through the entire surface of the battery, thereby greatly reducing the resistance.
Project Manager Mareike Wolter said: "with our new packaging concept, we hope to increase the mileage of electric vehicles to 1000 km.
A bipolar electrode is a metal strip coated with ceramic material on both sides: one side turns into a positive electrode and the other is turned into a negative electrode. The anode is made of lithium titanate, and the cathode is lithium nickel manganese spinel. This arrangement can support high battery voltage and energy density of 500Wh / L.
"We use our expertise in ceramic technology to design electrodes that greatly reduce the amount of space needed to save a lot of energy, and this technology is easy to industrialize and produce long life batteries." Dr. Wolter says.
The next step, Dr. Wolter said, is to develop larger batteries and assemble them on electric vehicles, and plan to conduct preliminary tests on vehicles before 2020.
It is worth mentioning that, in the EMBATT project, IKTS partner is Thyssen Krupp systems engineering company, as well as IAV automotive engineering company.
